What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure done to improve the symmetry of the breasts and increase the size of the breasts with the help of saline, form-stable, or silicone breast implants. This breast surgery can increase breast volume and the projection of the breasts, improve the balance of breast and hip contours and enhance self-image and self-confidence. It can also be combined with a breast lift where we lift the breasts and remove excess breast tissue for the ultimate in breast rejuvenation.

Who is a Candidate?

Individuals who feel that their breasts are too small for their body, who feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or low-cut tops, have small breasts due to weight loss, or have asymmetrical breasts can often benefit from breast augmentation surgery. Ideal candidates for this procedure will be in overall good health, have a positive attitude, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure. A consultation with Dr. Sweat can help to determine if you’re a good candidate to undergo breast augmentation.

The Procedure

Breast augmentation uses breast implants to increase the size of the breasts. There is a selection of breast implants to choose from today, including silicone, form stable, and saline implants. Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, while silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. Form-stable implants or silicone gel implants are also filled with silicone gel, though the gel is a firmer consistency.

During the breast implant procedure, an incision is made for implant insertion. The implants are either placed over or under the chest muscles. There are a number of incision patterns that can be used, including the periariolar (around the nipple), the inframammary (in the breast fold), and transaxillary (in the armpit). The incision that is right for you can be determined by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sweat during your consultation.

Results and Recovery

After your breast implant surgery, you will be placed in a surgical dressing that may include a support bra or garment. Any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication, and swelling and bruising are common. The first week after surgery you may return to work, depending on the nature of your job. For the next two to six weeks, be sure to avoid excessive physical activity, and be gentle with your breasts. Recovery time may differ from patient to patient. You’ll want to closely follow Dr. Sweat’s aftercare instructions to ensure you minimize scar tissue and heal properly.
