What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure done to improve the symmetry of the breasts and increase the size of the breasts. This procedure can increase fullness and projection of the breasts, improve balance of breast and hip contours, and enhance self-image and self-confidence.

Who is a Candidate?

Individuals who feel that their breasts are too small for their body, who feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit of low-cut tops, have small breasts due to weight loss, or have asymmetrical breasts can often benefit from a breast augmentation. Ideal candidates for this procedure will be in overall good health, have a positive attitude, and realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure. A consultation with Dr. Sweat can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.

The Procedure

Breast augmentation uses breast implants to increase the size of the breasts. There is a selection of breast implants to choose from today, including saline, silicone, and form stable. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, while silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. Form stable implants are also filled with a silicone gel, though the gel is a firmer consistency.

During the procedure, an incision is made, through which the implant will be placed either over or under the chest muscles. There are a number of incision patterns that can be used, including the periariolar (around the nipple), the inframammary (in the breast fold), and transaxillary (in the armpit). The incision that is right for you can be determine by Dr. Sweat during your consultation.

Results and Recovery

After your breast augmentation procedure, you will be placed in a surgical dressing that may include a support bra or garment. Any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication, and swelling and bruising are common. The first week after surgery you may return to work, depending on the nature of your job. For the next two to six weeks, be sure to avoid excessive physical activity, and be gentle with your breasts. Recovery time may differ from patient to patient.
