What is Kybella®?
Kybella is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment used for the reduction of submental fullness caused by excess fat under the chin and neck. Kybella injections are performed in a series of treatments to reduce severe fat in the treatment area over time, effectively dissolving the fat, which your body slowly removes.
The main ingredient in Kybella is a substance called deoxycholic acid. This active ingredient breaks down and destroys fat cells to be flushed out of the body over time. With a series of treatment sessions, patients can experience a noticeable reduction in fullness and may even see some mild tightening of the skin without the need for a cosmetic procedure. Kybella can also be combined with other aesthetic treatments like dermal fillers.
Who is a Candidate?
Anyone who is bothered by the appearance of submental fat or a double chin can benefit from this injection. However, this minimally invasive treatment is intended for those who have stubborn fat cells causing fullness and not loose skin. Loose skin without excess fat cannot be treated by Kybella treatment. Additionally, patients taking blood thinners, experiencing nerve injury, or currently undergoing active infection or other medical conditions may need alternative treatments.
Many people with fullness under their chin feel that it makes them look heavier or older than they really are. Even patients who eat well and exercise regularly can experience fullness in the chin and neck due to genetics. Although surgical procedures can also be used to treat this area, Kybella can be done in the office with no downtime.

The Procedure
Kybella utilizes a naturally occurring molecule to break down and absorb dietary fat, helping patients achieve a slimmer and more defined profile. A topical numbing agent may be applied to ensure comfort during the treatment.
The Kybella solution is injected directly into the submental fat using a fine needle, with multiple injections strategically placed to ensure even and natural-looking results. Each session typically lasts 15–20 minutes, making it a quick and convenient option for busy individuals.
Most patients require 2–4 sessions spaced approximately a month apart to achieve their desired outcomes. The exact number of treatments depends on the amount of submental fat and individual goals.

The Results
Since every patient’s anatomy is different, Dr. Sweat and his staff will work with you to create a treatment plan based on your medical history and aesthetic goals. You will likely need more than one treatment, with the recommended treatment plan ranging from 1-3 treatments, performed 4-6 weeks apart. Some patients may need up to six treatments.
After your treatment, your body needs time to let the deoxycholic acid to go to work to break down and absorb the submental fat cells.
Results will continue to improve over the following weeks. Once the fat cells are gone, they won’t return, but it’s important to stick to a healthy lifestyle, as weight gain could cause fat cells in other areas to affect the results.
While there is no downtime associated with this FDA-approved treatment, and the Kybella injections are relatively painless, within about 5-10 minutes of the injection, most patients will experience a dull achy pain similar to a toothache, which will last an hour or two. Swelling at the injection site is often significant, which can make the area look worse before it gets better, so it is important to plan the treatment around important events or occasions. The swelling will usually last for 5-7 days before returning to the pre-treatment look with slow improvement over the following weeks.
While the swelling and initial discomfort in the treatment area can be troubling, it is important to avoid medications that can counter the swelling response, as this is an important factor in how the product works. Lumpiness and numbness will slowly resolve as the fat is absorbed.
