What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which male breast tissue enlarges due to hormonal imbalance in the body, commonly seen around puberty or at later ages. The enlarged breast tissue can also be caused by hereditary factors, pituitary gland concerns, issues with the adrenal glands, obesity, and certain drugs that are not linked to male breast cancer. Pseudogynecomastia can be caused by obesity, in which the excess volume in the chest area is almost exclusively fat rather than breast tissue.
Gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, can affect newborns, boys during puberty, and older men and can be the cause of self-consciousness and embarrassment for those diagnosed.
Who is a Candidate?
Men who are unhappy with the size or appearance of one or both breasts or those who experience physical discomfort due to their breasts can often benefit from the removal of the breast tissue with or without additional chest contouring techniques such as liposuction. Hormonal issues, such as increased estrogen levels from medication or glandular causes, may increase the risk factors of breast tissue. A similar male breast reduction procedure technique is often used for chest gender reassignment surgery in female-to-male transgender patients.
Good candidates will have good skin elasticity, be near their goal weight, and be non-smokers and non-drug users. Prostate cancer may also cause gynecomastia; while adolescents who develop pubertal gynecomastia may be able to benefit from male breast reduction, a second procedure may be required in the future if breast development continues. A consultation with Dr. Sweat can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.

The Procedure
Male breast reduction surgery can be used to treat gynecomastia. The surgical technique used will depend on the cause of your enlarged breasts. If excess fatty tissue is the main cause, liposuction alone may be able to correct the issue. A thin, hollow cannula will be placed through small incisions to remove the fat through suction. The surgical treatment will also remove excess breast tissue.
Excision Technique
In the case that excess glandular breast tissue is the cause of your gynecomastia, the excision technique will be used.
Repositioning and Incision Patterns
The nipple may also be repositioned. Incision patterns will vary depending on your condition.
Liposuction
Liposuction and excision techniques may also be used if fatty and glandular tissue are present.
The Benefits
of Male Breast Reduction
Male breast reduction offers an effective solution for men experiencing gynecomastia, a condition characterized by excess breast tissue. This procedure can restore a more masculine chest contour, enhance self-confidence, and improve physical comfort.
The Results
Following gynecomastia surgery, compression garments must be worn to reduce swelling. If a particularly large amount of tissue is removed, drains may be required for a few days after surgery. Most patients can return to work within 2-5 days of surgery. Strenuous activities, especially pectoral exercises, should be avoided for the first three to six weeks to ensure optimal recovery.
Men can expect a significant improvement in post-surgical chest contour and a boost in confidence. Scarring is usually hidden next to the areola and will fade nicely with time.
