What is PRP Therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a breakthrough treatment that utilizes your own blood platelets to stimulate collagen production in the body.
During a platelet-rich plasma therapy, we’ll take a blood sample and place it into a centrifuge which then spins the blood to separate the platelets from the red blood cells and white blood cells. The platelets are what help produce blood clots. Then, the platelet-rich plasma is used to help target the treatment area. Treatment can come in the form of a PRP injection or by applying PRP directly to the skin.
At J. Sweat Plastic Surgery, we use PRP therapy in a number of ways, including hair restoration and PRP with microneedling.
PRP Hair Restoration
PRP treatment can be used to help restore a fuller, thicker head of hair in men and women with hair loss or thinning areas of hair. After your blood is drawn and separated, plasma is injected directly into the scalp. You may feel some tenderness or experience redness a the PRP injection site but those side effects will diminish in a few days. The growth factors and proteins contained in the platelet-rich plasma injections help to stimulate hair growth for a fuller head of hair.
PRP with Microneedling
PRP can also be used to rejuvenate the complexion when combined with microneedling. During this treatment, microneedling is used to create small micro-wounds in the skin to stimulate collagen production and trigger the body’s natural healing process. When PRP is applied to the skin as well, growth factors are introduced for optimal absorption. This treatment improves the appearance of acne, wrinkles and lines, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, large pores, and uneven skin texture.
Ideal Candidates for PRP Therapy
Individuals who are looking for a natural solution to hair thinning, sexual enhancement, muscle injuries, chronic tendon injuries, or an aging complexion can often benefit from PRP therapy. Ideal candidates will be healthy overall with realistic expectations for their results. A consultation with Dr. Sweat is the best way to determine if this treatment option is right for you.
